 Minutes July 28,  2010

  • Clem Guarlotti opened the meeting, Salute to the Flag and Prayer.
    • Clem gave the financial report outlining balances in the account.

  • Old Business
    • Joe Volpe gave an update on the Italian Dictionaries/ possible Language classes:
      • Classes will begin in September.  Tentative schedule is 15 weeks (Joe distributed tentative dates).  It seems that Thursday evenings from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM is the best time for those who signed up.  Location to be determined.
      • Joe provided a tentative outline of class structure – weeks 1 to 5 students will complete a Family Tree to examine their family heritage.
      • Joe distributed a list of common Italian phrases.
      • Still finalizing instructor for the classes.  Many ideas.  If you know someone – talk to Joe.
      • Parents MUST be involved with their child for these classes.   It is important that parents work with their child over the duration of these classes to reinforce learning that is taking place.

    • Joe distributed a listing of upcoming Italian festivals as a follow up to a previous discussion that the group held.  He also suggested that when members have a “new idea”, the group needs to immediately discuss the idea, and if group agrees with the idea, assign the work to a small group or a member for follow up.  We are generating ideas but when not acted upon, they get “lost” from meeting to meeting.

  • Committee Reports
    • Golf Outing –RuthAnn Kalinowski provided an update on the Golf Outing scheduled for Friday September 10, 2010 at Hannastown Golf Club.

  • Cost is $100 per person for the event.  Includes golf, prizes and dinner at Rizzi’s.
  • Committee has secured 4 sponsors for the tournament.  Still need sponsors!  Talk to your friend who own businesses. This is a great opportunity to advertise their business!
  • Signage will be provided for those sponsoring the event – signs on the greens or tees.  Sponsor a hole!
  • Letters soliciting prizes and donations have been sent out.  If you need a letter – see Ruth Ann.
    • Committee has secured car from Smail for the “Hole in One” prize.  There will also be prizes for the closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, etc.
    • All is moving along – continue to support where you can.
    • Mike reported that Bill Mazeroski will be playing in the tournament with us.  Bring your friends to meet Bill – a Pirate baseball legend!

    • Bocci –Tony Martino reported that the Bocci league is in full swing and members are having a great time!  If you are interested in being a substitute, contact Dennis at blasiole1119@comcast.net or by phone at 724 834-5187.  Everyone is welcome to attend to watch the games – every Tuesday (weather permitting) beginning at 6:30PM at the AMS Club.
    • Annual Christmas Dance – Clem reported that the Christmas Dance will be held on FRIDAY DECEMBER 3, 2010 at Lakeview.  Tell your friends and hold the date.  More details in the coming months.

    • Wine Tasting – Tony Martino reported that the date for next year’s Wine Tasting will be moved to May.  Tony will talk to Rizzi and get a date for the event.  .

    • Scholarship Committee – This committee will meet in the Fall.

    • Program Committee – If you have suggestions for speakers/programs for our monthly meetings, please let Tony Martino know!  It would be nice to have a speaker each quarter.  After the meeting, Joe spoke with Cheryl Pagano,  whose grandfather might be interested in speaking to the group about Italian life during “The Depression”.    Cheryl will speak to her grandfather about attending our next meeting.

  • New Business
  • No new business was presented.

  •  Items from the Floor
  • The Westmoreland Cultural Trust hosts a bocci tournament each year, the event is scheduled for the end of August, 2010.  Should we have a team representing our Lodge at this event?  Toni Walter received an invitation to the tournament.  She will take the information to Bocci next week and those involved in playing will decide if the Lodge should sponsor a team in the tournament.

  • There was discussion about holding one of our meetings at the AMS Club in South Greensburg.  We have talked before about “visiting other Italian Clubs” and this may be one method to do so.  We need to ask the AMS club if they would be interested in “hosting” our monthly meeting at their location.  The group will get Denny to ask if we could hold our September meeting at the AMS club.  Watch your minutes/announcements for details!!!!
